Industry Survey: Demand for IoT, IP security, cloud and mobile technologies set to increase in Australia in the next three years

A survey conducted by this year’s Security Exhibition & Conference ahead of the event has found that 90 percent of respondents surveyed believed that the Internet of Things (IoT), IP security and cloud and mobile technologies will have a big impact on the industry over the next three years.

The survey included respondents from mid-sized Australian companies in the access control and building management as well as CCTV and surveillance sectors with nearly 80 percent of these respondents having a turnover of between $3 and $50 million.

Lower prices, increased competition, greater technology options and growth in the security market are some of the contributing factors that will fuel the market.

Respondents surveyed believed that in line with increasing terror threats; security screening and visitor management would become more a necessity for businesses. Furthermore, there would be greater integration of technologies resulting in a convergence between physical security and cyber security. Respondents also believed that in the areas of video and automation, there would be greater standardisation and consolidation around a small number of products or protocols.

IoT, IP security, cloud and mobile technologies as well as BYOD

The survey found that 65 percent of respondents felt that IoT would have a significant impact on the industry. Seventy-three percent and 69 percent of respondents respectively believed that growth of IP and cloud, and mobile technology and bring your own devices (BYOD) would have a significant impact on the industry.

However, fewer respondents expected growth of video monitoring and access control to have a big effect on the industry.

Almost all respondents expected the adoption of surveillance data analytics to increase over the next 12 months, with the same number in agreement that cloud storage is changing the way organisations are storing surveillance data.

The survey also found that:

• 31 percent of respondents said that the advancement of big data and analytics is affecting the information collected by physical security and surveillance
• 46 percent of respondents expected the adoption of surveillance data analytics to increase over the next 12 months with only 15 percent of respondents in disagreement on this
• 46 percent of respondents said that cloud storage is changing the way organisation are storing surveillance data while 19 percent of respondents disagreeing
• In the area of home automation, only 35 percent of respondents said home automation was affecting the security industry.

According to Security Exhibition & Conference Event Manager, Melissa Clendinen, the survey shows a growing demand for cyber security, information & communication technology and IP security among Australian businesses and organisations.

This will help drive down prices and provide businesses and consumers with more options and better value.”
